busy in the bathroom
Let me preface this by saying that changing a lightbulb in our house can be a major ordeal. Neither Davey or I are what you would call "handy" around the house. We have had some confidence building projects such removing wallpaper and painting the inside...building a deck (under the instruction of a family friend.
We are now faced with a challenge that I am hoping will be a positive, learning experience and pray that this will not sever the something-erruther-teen year relationship. Many of our previous projects often included some of our nastiest, teeth bearing, tearful fights we've ever had but we always come out as happy and calm as we were before we started.
Over the years I have fought a mold problem in the bathroom above the shower. I am ususally successful in removing it before it does any damage. Not long ago, I noticed a different pattern to the mold. I saw a couple little circles. They almost looked like little bulls eyes.
Shame on me for not taking pictures, I know. After doing some poking and scratching, we noticed it was behind the paint, behind the very thin layer of texture and right into the drywall. David grabbed a hammer and in no time, I had a huge hole in the ceiling of my bathroom.
In short, we had to replace the drywall in the ceiling. If you see this picture, it's a special green, "moisture resistant" material. It obviously looks as if a novice relaced it as the cuts are crooked and there are gaps and I fear we did not replace the insulation to the degree it was before we opened it up. I am actually very pleased with the results. It is now up to me to fill the holes with mud, tape up all the seams, apply the texture and repaint with special moisture resistant paint. I know the process is going to be pretty time consuming and meticulous and I know I will be spending days working on it until it is complete.
After this, we replace the sink, light fixtures, flooring. I figure we should be done by end of summer...(yeah, that's reality) but at least it's the master bathroom so if we mess up, we'll be the only ones who notice!
My only advice would be if you have a damp bathroom, get a super powered fan, keep the ceiling and walls dry and get rid of the mold as soon as you see it.
On a side note, when we tore it down, we could see they had already replace that exact section of the ceiling before so it obviously is a problem area. Our thoughts? Get a stronger fan, keep it warm in there and make sure the ceiling is not wet for a long period of time.

sorry for the crappy picture. I thought I'd try not blogging from flickr to see what it was like. I'm not pleased with the results so my future posts will be up close and personal. Eh, you didn't want to see the mistakes anyway.
